The story

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong, a native of Wapakoneta, became the first person to walk on the Moon. That same day Ohio Governor James Rhodes proposed a museum in Wapakoneta as a monument to the achievement and to Ohio's contributions to aviation. It opened on July 20, 1972, three years to the day later, with Armstrong and the president's daughter Tricia Nixon Cox in attendance.

The museum sits in an earthen berm topped by a dome, built to look like a moon base as people imagined one in 1972. Inside are the Gemini 8 spacecraft Armstrong piloted in 1966 for the first docking in space, two of his space suits, items from the Apollo program, a moon rock brought back on Apollo 11, an F5D Skylancer and galleries that follow spaceflight from the early Space Race to the end of the Space Shuttle. Armstrong learned to fly as a teenager and earned a pilot's license before a driver's license, and the Neil Armstrong Scenic Byway follows those early years.

The Moon Base in the Cornfield

Three years to the day after Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, his home town opened a museum that looks like it was made for one. It is set into a hill, with a glowing dome, like a moon base someone imagined in 1972.

Inside is the small capsule Armstrong flew on the first docking in space, and a piece of rock he carried home.
