The story

Kinzer Mound sits outside the village of South Salem in Ross County, on high ground far from any stream. It is sub-conical, about 7.6 feet tall and 70 feet across, and it is believed to have been built by the Adena because of its location and shape. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and its address is restricted, a common step to protect such sites from looters.

The Address That Is a Secret

Most sites in this app come with directions. This one does not. The National Register lists Kinzer Mound's address as restricted, which means the government has deliberately kept its location off the public record.

It is a reminder that some mounds are protected by silence.

Behind the legend

The restriction is documented in the National Register listing. Looting of mounds is a long-standing problem in Ohio, and restricting addresses is one of the ways agencies try to prevent it. The Adena attribution rests on the mound's shape and setting.
