The story

In the village of Newtown, on the east side of Cincinnati, the Odd Fellows' Cemetery holds an Adena mound about 110 feet long, 90 feet wide and 11.3 feet high. It is one of the few remnants of a large complex of prehistoric earthworks and villages around Newtown, and most of the others have been destroyed. Its location in a cemetery spared it, since only a few graves have been dug around it, without significant damage. A much smaller mound in the same cemetery was damaged when six graves were dug into its side. The Perin Village Site, believed to have been a Hopewell village, lies about 0.3 mile northwest.

The Mound the Cemetery Saved

Newtown was once ringed with earthworks. Then came roads, farms and suburbs, and one by one the mounds went. This one survived because someone decided to bury their dead beside it, and a cemetery is one of the few places in a growing city where the ground is left alone.

A second, smaller mound in the same cemetery was not so lucky.

Behind the legend

The preservation is documented in the National Register description. It is a strange chapter: the cemetery protected the older burial place, and also damaged the smaller mound by digging graves into it. The Perin Village Site nearby is now a golf course.
