The story

The Wamsley Village Burial Mounds are Adena burial mounds in Adams County, the same county as the Great Serpent Mound. Archaeological work at the site found a number of burials, and the site remains preserved today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Little else has been published in the sources available for this entry.

The Quiet Neighbors of the Serpent

Adams County is famous for the Serpent Mound, but it is full of quieter places. The Wamsley Village burial mounds are one of them: a group of Adena graves that were dug, studied and then left in place. Nothing about them draws crowds.

They are a reminder that the serpent is not alone. The hills around it are dotted with the burial mounds of the people who lived nearby.

Behind the legend

The entry is short because the record is short. The documented facts are that archaeology was done, burials were found and the site was listed on the National Register. The site is not a visitor destination.

ODNR's own history of Adams Lake State Park notes that the Adena and Hopewell built mounds in this county, and points north to the Serpent Mound.
