The story

In 1993 the Dublin Arts Council brought the sculptor Malcolm Cochran to an empty half-acre and asked what he thought. He noticed a line of old Osage orange trees, which early farmers planted as hedges, and learned the land had been a farm, where Sam Frantz, a hybrid-corn breeder who worked with The Ohio State University, had developed new strains. Cochran made molds of three ears of a corn variety Frantz would have known, blew them up to more than six feet and cast 109 of them in white concrete, then set them upright in rows, turned slightly so no pattern of kernels repeats.

He has said he was startled by how fast farmland was turning into development around Dublin, and that he sees the piece as a memorial. The land had been farmed for some 1,800 years, and the white ears also recall the rows of identical white markers at Arlington National Cemetery. Locals call it Cornhenge, and plaques beneath the trees tell the story of the field and of corn.

The park is at the corner of Rings and Frantz roads.
