The story of this land

People have been here about ten thousand years. Archaeological digs nearby have turned up arrowheads, pottery and knives from the Clovis culture — Paleoindian people who arrived not long after the last ice sheet pulled back. Little Beaver Creek itself, now a National Wild and Scenic River, was shaped by four separate ice ages, which is why the valley is as deep and strange as it is.

The nineteenth century brought an enormous, doomed piece of infrastructure. The Sandy and Beaver Canal was chartered in 1828 and ran 73 miles from the Ohio and Erie Canal at Bolivar to the Ohio River at Glasgow, Pennsylvania — 90 locks and 30 dams, an extraordinary amount of stonework for the terrain. Construction dragged from 1834 to 1848. The middle section had problems from the start and fell into disrepair almost immediately. By 1853, railroads had made the whole thing pointless and the canal closed. It operated, in any real sense, for about five years.

What it left behind is the reason to come. Lusk's Lock, built in 1836, has a double-curved stone staircase and is the largest and most artistic lock on the canal — still intact, still standing in the woods. Tradition holds that the deep valley there was a favorite haunt of Simon Girty, the notorious Revolutionary-era renegade, and the lock carries his name locally. Gaston's Mill, built in 1837, ground flour for settlers until World War I, was restored beginning in 1964, and now grinds whole wheat, corn meal, and buckwheat again — the only working water-powered grist mill in Columbiana County. And somewhere in the park sits Sprucevale, an abandoned canal town. Crumbling foundations, a few standing buildings, and Hambleton's Mill, which unlike Gaston's has never been made to run again.

About 16 miles of hiking trail. Because the park sits in the foothills of the Appalachians, some routes are rugged and steep while others are flat and easy. The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through the park. Mountain bike and bridle trails as well.

Gretchen's Lock

Deep in the park, beside a stone lock on the Sandy and Beaver Canal, there is a legend of a little girl. The most common telling goes like this. An Irish canal builder, Edward Gill, sailed to Ohio with his wife and baby daughter Gretchen. His wife died on the voyage and was buried at sea. In 1834 he began work on the lock, and when Gretchen died too, he could not bear to leave her. He sealed her coffin into the lock's walls, meaning to take her home when the work was done. When the canal failed, he set sail for Ireland with her remains, and the ship went down with both of them. Gretchen is said to appear on the lock each year on the anniversary of her death, looking for her mother.

Not far away, another lock has its own ghost. Jake's Lock is said to be named for a caretaker who was struck by lightning on top of the lock, and on stormy nights he is said to make his rounds again with a lantern.

Behind the legend

The canal is real, and the ghost stories are the kind that move around. Folklore versions do not agree. One says Gretchen's father was a Dutch or Irish engineer and that her mother died at home, and that Gretchen herself died of malaria in Ohio. The other says the mother died at sea. The one thing every version has in common is that the ship is lost. What is documented is the canal: the Sandy and Beaver was 73 and a half miles long with 90 locks and 30 dams, it was built from 1834 to 1848 (the 1837 panic delayed it), and it ran only about four years before a reservoir failed in 1852 and railroads finished it off. Lock 36 beside Gaston's Mill was rebuilt in 1988 to 1991, and the mill was built in 1837.

The park's best-preserved structure has its own tale. Lusk's Lock, the largest and most ornate, is also called Simon Girty's Lock because it is believed the notorious Revolutionary War renegade frequented the area. Belief is the word to notice.

Walk the towpath to Lock 36 and Gaston's Mill, then find Lusk's Lock with its double-curved stone staircase. If you go on a stormy evening, you may not want to go alone.
