The story of this land

The Little Miami basin has held people for something like three thousand years. The Adena and Hopewell built here — the mound near Elklick Road is believed to be Adena work, and it's still there, a low earthen rise most visitors drive past without noticing. The Erie nation lived in this region much later, until 1655, when they were destroyed as a people by the Iroquois. For the rest of the seventeenth century this country was essentially empty, a hunting ground nobody held.

Settlement came in the ordinary way, and the land stayed farms and woodlots until the Corps of Engineers dammed the East Fork of the Little Miami River to create William H. Harsha Lake. The park was established in the 1970s around that water, and at 4,870 land acres plus 2,160 of lake it became one of the largest in the Ohio system.

What it's best known for now is trail. The park carries roughly 82 miles of it, including the 46-mile Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail — named for a Bethel man who walked around the world on foot — which makes this one of the few genuine multi-day backpacking destinations in southwest Ohio. It's about forty minutes from downtown Cincinnati, which is a strange thing to be able to say about a 46-mile backcountry loop.

Hiking trails

About 82 miles of trail in total, including a 46-mile backpack loop (the Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail), plus mountain bike and bridle systems. A section of the Buckeye Trail runs through the park.

Getting on the water

2,160 acres with unlimited horsepower, which makes Harsha Lake the big recreational water for Cincinnati's east side. Ski boats and jet skis on summer weekends, with quieter arms if you go looking.

Good to know

  • Hybrid striped bass are a signature fish here and fight well above their size.
  • Summer weekends get busy given the Cincinnati proximity — weekdays are a different lake.

The Man Who Walked Around the World

Nearly forty minutes from downtown Cincinnati there is a 46-mile backcountry loop, and it carries the name of a walker. The Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter Trail is named for a Bethel man who walked around the world on foot. The trail circles William H. Harsha Lake in a park with about 82 miles of trail in all, which makes East Fork one of the few genuine multi-day backpacking destinations in southwest Ohio.
