The story of this land

This peninsula was Ottawa and Wyandot country, and the Ottawa name means, fittingly, 'trader.' An east-west trail ran along the southern shore of Lake Erie here, linking the settlements that would become Pittsburgh and Detroit and tying into the Scioto Trail running south. That made this a crossroads long before it was a campground. The land stayed in Native hands until the British and their allies were defeated in the War of 1812, and the Marblehead lighthouse went up in 1821 to guide ships through the harbor — it still stands, and it's still lit.

Once the Black Swamp was drained the peninsula's soil turned out to be excellent for fruit. Peaches and grapes came off this land by the boatload through the 1800s, and the islands and shoreline developed a wine industry that predates California's by decades. The park opened in 1947, built around what the glaciers and the lake left: two miles of sand and dune separating the open water from the sheltered harbors behind.

That dune line is the whole story of the place. On one side, Lake Erie — open, windy, unlimited horsepower, the walleye capital of the world. On the other, Middle Harbor: a no-wake lagoon managed as a refuge, where herons stand in the shallows and migrating birds drop in by the thousands each spring and fall, having just crossed or about to cross a very large lake. The campground here is the largest in the Ohio state park system, which means on a July weekend this is one of the busier places in the state. Walk out to the Middle Harbor observation decks at sunrise and you'd never know it.

Getting on the water

East Harbor sits on a peninsula with open Lake Erie on one side and sheltered harbors on the other, which is the practical appeal: you can launch into calm water and run out to the lake when conditions allow. No boat-in campsites, but the campground is a short distance from the ramps.

Good to know
