The story of this land

The lake you're camped beside is named for a people who aren't here anymore. Erie comes from the tribal name of the nation that lived along this shoreline until roughly 1655, and it translates as something close to 'wildcat' or 'it is long-tailed.' They were dispersed in the Beaver Wars, and within a generation the shore belonged to trade instead — French trappers ran routes across the lake by the mid-1600s, and after them came everyone else.

What the lake did, more than anything, was move things. It was the highway before there were roads. By the mid-1800s Ohio's canal system connected inland farms to this shoreline and this shoreline to the eastern cities, and Ashtabula County shipped out what it grew. Some of what it grew was grapes. The Grand River Valley's climate — moderated by all that water, with a long cool autumn — turned out to suit vinifera and native varieties both, and the wineries that line the roads south of the park are not a tourism invention. They're what the soil has been doing here for well over a century.

Then people started coming just to be here. Geneva-on-the-Lake, the strip of arcades and cottages and soft-serve immediately east of the park, is generally called Ohio's first summer resort — a place where Cleveland and Pittsburgh families have been coming to do nothing in particular since the 1860s. The state park came much later and serves a quieter purpose: 698 acres of marsh, creek estuary, and woodlot holding a stretch of shoreline open to everyone. Walk the two-mile paved path at dusk and you get both versions of this place at once — the resort lights to the east, and to the north nothing but water all the way to Canada.

Getting on the water

Geneva is built around its marina, so boating is the organizing principle of the park rather than an add-on. The cottages sit directly on the shoreline; the campground is set back among the trees a short drive from the water.

Ohio's First Summer Resort

It began with a picnic ground. On July 4, 1869, a local businessman named Cullen Spencer, with a partner, opened a cleared bluff on Lake Erie called Sturgeon Point to the public for a fee. Soon they added a carousel and a boarding house, and the crowds from Cleveland and Pittsburgh, looking for relief from the summer heat, kept coming. By the early 1900s the lakeshore had become a camping and fishing playground where, the village says, John D. Rockefeller, Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford came to camp and fish.

The Strip grew up beside it, with arcades, restaurants and rides, and Erieview Park, an amusement park, opened in 1945. The state began buying land for the state park in 1964, and by 1974 it had cabins, campgrounds and a swimming beach.

Behind the legend

The date and the claim of being first are consistent across the village, the county and ODNR, and the story is about the details. Sources give the partner as Edwin Pratt in one place and Edward Pratt in another, and one account credits Spencer alone. The carousel is called steam-driven in one history and horse-powered or pony-powered in others. The list of famous visitors comes from the village's own promotion. Erieview Park closed in 2006, though its Ferris wheel and carousel are still in use nearby.

It also matters that the state park is much newer than the resort. Geneva State Park was assembled from purchases beginning in 1964, so the campground you camp in stands beside a town that is over 150 years old.

Walk the Strip at dusk and find the spot where Sturgeon Point started. Then bike the paved path from the campground to the beach and to town, which is how the resort era felt.
