The story of this land

Drive out here through the corn and soybean fields and it is hard to picture what this ground used to be. After the last ice age, the region sat under a much larger Lake Erie. When the lake shrank back, it left behind the Great Black Swamp, a soggy forest roughly 120 miles long and 30 to 40 miles wide, shaded by giant trees and floored with dark, sticky soil. For generations it was a barrier to western travel. Most settlers skirted it by boat on Lake Erie, and it was the last part of Ohio to fill up. Only when farmers learned to drain the soil in the 1850s did people move in for good.

There is a border story here too. Ohio and Michigan argued for about ten years over an 11-mile-wide strip of land running west from the mouth of the Maumee River. Congress settled the matter in 1836 in Ohio's favor. Had it gone the other way, this park would be in Michigan.

Mill Creek was dammed in 1941 to form the lake. For its first years the property was managed mainly for hunting and fishing, and in 1950 it became a state park. The massasauga rattlesnake, once at home in the swamp, is long gone from most of the region, but the park still holds pieces of that wetland world: shallow marsh at the lake's west end, herons in the shallows, turtles on the logs.

Fishing

Harrison Lake (105 acres): largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, bullhead catfish, northern pike and carp. Ohio fishing license required for ages 16 and up.

Getting on the water

Harrison Lake is 105 acres of quiet, shallow water. All boat types are allowed, but everything runs at no-wake speed, which makes it a good lake for paddlers and anglers.

Good to know

The lake is only about 15 feet deep at its deepest, near the dam, so it warms fast and fishes best in spring and fall.
Look for herons and egrets at the shallow western end.
Winter is underrated: sledding at the east end of the lake, plus ice fishing when it freezes solid.

The Swamp and the Border That Almost Went to Michigan

Drive out through the cornfields toward this lake and try to picture what was here. After the last ice age, the region sat under a much larger Lake Erie. When the lake shrank, it left the Great Black Swamp, a soggy forest about 120 miles long and 30 to 40 miles wide that was the last part of Ohio to be settled. It was drained in the 1850s. The Black Swamp was also home to the massasauga rattlesnake, which has mostly vanished from the region.

There is a second story here, about the line on the map. Ohio and Michigan argued for about ten years over an 11-mile-wide strip of land running west from the mouth of the Maumee River. In 1836 Congress settled it in Ohio's favor. Had it gone the other way, this lake would be in Michigan.

Behind the legend

The dispute is the one history books call the Toledo War. Both states raised militias and neither shot much, and Michigan was compensated with the Upper Peninsula when it joined the Union in 1837. The Ohio side had the Maumee harbor, the future port of Toledo, and canal plans, which is why it mattered. Ohio's win is the reason this park's campground is an Ohio one.

The swamp story is documented by ODNR. The lake here was dammed in 1941 and became a state park in 1950. Only fragments of the wetland remain, such as the shallow marsh at the lake's west end, which is where herons and turtles now live.
