The story of this land

Before it was a lake this was several small lakes and wet prairie at the head of the Great Miami River. Starting in the 1850s laborers built the $340,000 Lewistown Reservoir project, finishing the original spillway in 1860 and joining those scattered waters into what was then the second-largest man-made lake in the world — second only to Grand Lake St. Marys, about forty miles west. Both existed for the same reason: to keep water in the Miami and Erie Canal, which opened in 1825 and ran until it was abandoned in 1906.

What happened next is the part that still shapes the place. Indian Lake sat on the Toledo and Ohio Central steam line and the Ohio Electric Railway, which meant city people could get here easily just as leisure travel was becoming a thing. Resorts, dance halls, amusement rides, and lakeside cottages went up around the shore, and the lake picked up a nickname it wore for decades: the Midwest's Million Dollar Playground. Russells Point and Lakeview grew up as summer towns and never really stopped being them.

The dam aged, as dams do. After repeated repairs, a new 700-foot labyrinth weir spillway was built in 2018 to replace the old structure. The lake remains what it has been for over a century — more than 5,000 acres of water ringed by cottages, marinas, and small towns that fill up in July and go quiet in February. A tornado tore through the area in 2024, and businesses along the shore have been rebuilding since.

Modest trail mileage within the park — short paths at the campground and day-use areas. This is a boating and lakeside-town park rather than a hiking destination; the shoreline road is the main way people see it.

Good to know

  • Much of the shoreline is privately owned cottages — the state park is a portion of the lake, not the whole thing.
  • Weekends in July are the peak of the peak. Midweek is a different experience entirely.
  • Ice fishing is a real winter season here.

Ohio's Million Dollar Playground

Nobody built Indian Lake for fun. It was a plumbing project. In the 1850s the state dammed the marshy headwaters of the Great Miami River to make a feeder lake, the Lewistown Reservoir, that could top off the Miami and Erie Canal. Irish laborers built the spillway by hand. When railroads made the canal obsolete, the reservoir was left with no job, and in 1898 the General Assembly turned it into a public recreation area and gave it its present name.

The fun came in the 1920s. In 1924 a Russells Point man known as Pappy Wilgus opened Sandy Beach Amusement Park, advertised as the Midwest's Million Dollar Playground and the Atlantic City of the Midwest. Its dance pavilions reportedly drew big-band names including Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong. The park closed in 1975 by one account and in the early 1970s by another, and the only piece that survives is a steel arch bridge.

Behind the legend

The sources disagree on the dates. The state's historical marker says the dam was built from 1851 to 1860, while ODNR's canal lands page says the lake was completed in 1845. One history says the state bought the lake for a park in 1896, another says the General Assembly named it in 1898. The lake is 5,104 acres in one source and 5,800 in another. The 'famous performers' list comes from a local real estate history and is best treated as local lore.

What came before the lake is better documented. This was the Lewistown Reserve, a 40,300-acre reservation set aside after the Treaty of Fort Meigs in 1817 for Shawnee and Seneca people under Chief Quatawapea, known to Americans as Colonel Lewis. The tribes sold it to the United States in 1831. The only surviving piece of the amusement park is the steel bridge over the Russells Point harbor.

Walk the lakefront trail to Paradise Island and read the marker about the canal and the Lewistown Reserve. Then look at the arch bridge at Russells Point and imagine the dance halls. The spillway at State Route 366 is where the Great Miami River begins.
