The story of this land

Penitentiary Glen is named for the gorge that divides it, cut by Stoney Brook and so steep that settlers in the 1880s said it was as hard to climb out of as a prison. A local story says the gulch was used to hold prisoners in the Civil War, which is not documented. In 1912 Samuel Halle, who founded the Halle Bros. department store with his brother, and his wife Blanche bought much of the land as a summer estate they called Hallefarm. They built a suspension bridge across the gorge in the 1920s, a cottage, stables, a vineyard, rose garden, pool, tennis courts and an airstrip, and the Burnett family ran the working farm year-round. The Halles hosted an annual Pioneer Picnic for people from all over Lake and Geauga counties.

Samuel Halle kept visiting until his death in 1954, the summer house burned in the 1960s and Lake Metroparks bought the land in 1975. The reservation opened in 1980 with a nature center, and the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center, established in 1983, now cares for about 2,000 animals a year and releases about half of them. The Ohio Division of Wildlife lists it as a Watchable Wildlife site. The Buckeye Trail's Bedford Section passes through, and Historic Kirtland is a few miles away.

The Gulch You Couldn't Climb Out Of

The settlers who cleared the farms around Kirtland in the 1880s had a name for the ravine that split the land: the Penitentiary. Once you were at the bottom, they said, you were as good as locked in.

A story grew that the gulch had held prisoners in the Civil War. The name outlasted every farm in the neighborhood.

The 1880s naming and the 100-foot climb are on Lake Metroparks' page and the Cleveland Historical entry. The Civil War prisoner tale is a local legend that the sources call unproven. The Halle estate, the 1975 purchase and the 1980 opening are from Cleveland Historical, Touring Ohio and the AAA listing.
