The story of this land

More than 12,000 years ago, Rocky Fork Creek ran a different way. Then the glacial ice came south and blocked it. Dammed by a wall of ice, the stream reversed direction and cut hard and fast in its new course, carving out the 75-foot gorge that's still here. That's a geologically violent origin for what looks today like a quiet southwest Ohio park.

The rock is dolomite limestone, which matters for two reasons. It erodes into gorges and it dissolves into caves — rainwater trickling through the bedrock has hollowed out cave systems across the region, because dolomite is unusually vulnerable to that kind of chemical weathering. It also supports something rare: Sullivantia, a small white wildflower that is extremely uncommon in Ohio, blooms from the moist cliff faces in the gorge in midsummer. If you visit in July and look up at the wet rock, that's what you're looking for.

The park takes its name from the creek, and everything here follows from that stream — the gorge, the caves, the wetlands, and eventually the 2,080-acre lake impounded on it. What developed around the water is a straightforward recreation park: unlimited-horsepower boating, two beaches, a full-service campground on the northwest corner, and enough marina and amenity infrastructure that it draws steady weekend traffic from Columbus and Cincinnati alike.

Getting on the water

2,080 acres with no horsepower limit, which makes this a genuine ski lake — one of the better ones in southwest Ohio. The gorge and caves are downstream of the recreation, on the creek the lake is named for.

Good to know

  • Campground layout is confusing and directional signage is thin — get a map at check-in.

Behind the legend
