The story of this land

The park is named for William Stroud, a shareholder in the Ohio Company of Associates — the land company that organized the first organized American settlement in the Northwest Territory at Marietta in 1788. That's the layer underneath everything here: this was some of the earliest legally surveyed ground in the whole territory.

What came after was farming, and one family in particular. The Gilletts — Samuel and Charlotte Beach Gillett and their descendants — held well over a thousand acres on the west side of what's now the park. You can still walk into what they left. The old farmstead on the Trace Trail and the Pioneer Cemetery are both remnants of the Gillett occupation, sitting quietly in woods that have grown back over the fields.

The state bought the land for Athens State Forest through the 1940s and 50s. Construction on the Dow Lake Dam started in the late 1950s and finished in 1960, and at that point the whole thing became Strouds Run State Park. What makes it unusual today is proximity: the park boundary coincides with the Athens city limits in several places, so a 2,600-acre chunk of rugged unglaciated hill country sits directly against a university town. That's produced an unusually good trail network — the Thunderbunny 50k race runs here — and a ring of adjoining conservation land. The Athens Conservancy and the city have been assembling preserves around the park's edges since 2002, including Hawk Woods, an 85-acre old-growth stand.

Hiking trails

About 17 miles of hiking trail and 19 miles of mountain bike trail across roughly ten routes — Sundown (6.1 mi), Hollow Point (3.0 mi), Thunderbunny (2.7 mi), Hickory (2.7 mi), Trace, Finger Rock and others. Popular linked routes include the 15.1-mile Dow Lake Loop and a 20.8-mile tour of the park. The trails connect into the Athens Trail system and adjoining preserves.

The Woman at the Water's Edge

This is the darkest legend in the app, and it grows out of a real crime. Around Athens, the story goes that the ghost of Mrs. Stees walks the edge of Dow Lake, wringing her hands in grief. She is Helen Stees, who was killed in the fall of 1962 by her husband, Gene Stees, an assistant professor at Ohio University. Her body was put in a steel drum and dropped in the lake, and the park's water is where her ghost is said to be seen.

The second half of the story is why it has never faded. Gene Stees was caught, confessed and was convicted, and then he walked out of the state penitentiary in Columbus and was never seen again. Nobody has ever said for certain what became of him.

Behind the legend

The case is well documented, and the local telling follows it closely. On October 20, 1962, Helen Stees, 30, a nurse who lived with her parents in Ashland, met her husband in Athens to talk about reconciling. He struck her with a crowbar, suffocated her with a plastic bag and put her in a 55-gallon drum, and he sank it in Dow Lake. He confessed within days, divers found the barrel, and in February 1963 a jury convicted him of premeditated murder and recommended mercy, which meant a life sentence rather than the death penalty.

He worked his way up to trustee status at the Ohio Penitentiary, and on February 21, 1970, he simply walked away. Some ghost-lore pages give the escape as 1972, but newspaper and history-center accounts date it to 1970. He has never been found, and a Southeast Ohio History Center talk in 2026 still asked whether he is alive; he would be in his nineties. Dow Lake itself is much older than the story's telling: its dam was completed in 1960, so the lake was only two years old when the murder happened.
