When it flows

Fed by a cold water tributary of Silver Creek that supports reintroduced native brook trout, so it is most impressive during spring thaw and in winter and can run low in summer.

The story

The falls spills over a sandstone outcrop within the Silver Creek watershed, part of the same Paleozoic bedrock exposed across much of northeastern Ohio's park land, and the small gorge here shows the same freeze thaw and stream erosion patterns found at other Geauga County waterfalls.

For years the Geauga Park District kept this stretch of The West Woods off limits to the public in order to protect native brook trout that biologists were reintroducing to Silver Creek's cold, spring fed tributaries. Once the trout population became established, the park district built a bridge and a new 1.5 mile trail connecting the nature center to the falls and to the renovated Affelder House, opening the area to hikers in 2016 after keeping it deliberately quiet for years.

The item on the original list referred to an Ansel's Cave falls; Ansel's Cave itself is a sandstone ledge feature in The West Woods with restricted public access, available only on occasional guided naturalist programs. Affelder Falls, elsewhere in the same park, is the real, publicly accessible waterfall and is used here instead. Coordinates are approximate, based on the nature center address rather than a surveyed point for the falls.

Stay behind railings and on marked trails. Wet rock at the top and base of a falls is slick in every season, and most Ohio falls do not allow swimming, wading or climbing. Flow depends on rain: many falls are a trickle in late summer and at their best after a wet spell, in spring, or frozen in a hard winter.

Getting to the falls

About a 1.5 mile trail connects The West Woods Nature Center to the falls and the restored Affelder House, crossing a bridge over the creek along the way.
