When it flows

Best in spring and after rain. It is a rare canyon style falls for this part of Ohio.

The story

Robinson Falls formed where a small tributary drops through a narrow, twisting notch cut into Blackhand sandstone, an unusually tight canyon shape for this part of Ohio. The moss and fern lined microhabitat around the falls is fragile, which is part of why the state limits how close visitors can get.

The surrounding land was set aside by the state as Boch Hollow State Nature Preserve. Because the approach to the falls crosses erosion prone slopes, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources restricts entry to a permitted overlook rather than allowing open access to the creek bed, unlike most other Hocking Hills area waterfalls.

Coordinates and the 12 foot height come from an unconfirmed waterfall database entry rather than an official ODNR survey; treat them as approximate. An access permit from ODNR is required before visiting, and the trailhead location given with the permit may differ from the general preserve address listed here.

Stay behind railings and on marked trails. Wet rock at the top and base of a falls is slick in every season, and most Ohio falls do not allow swimming, wading or climbing. Flow depends on rain: many falls are a trickle in late summer and at their best after a wet spell, in spring, or frozen in a hard winter.

Getting to the falls

A short walk of about a quarter mile from a small pull off down into the gorge to an overlook. Visitors must stay at the overlook and cannot approach the base of the falls.
